A question we’re commonly asked is what’s the best way to get life insurance as a teacher?

First, it’s important to figure out how much insurance you actually need, and there’s no one-size fits all answer.

There are three key considerations:

1. How much debt would need to be paid off?

2. How much income would need to be replaced?

3. How much you'd like to leave as a legacy?

Once you know these numbers, it’s time to figure out what types of policies to get, and where to get them.

The main types of life insurance are called term and permanent. Generally, teachers are best served purchasing more term coverage than permanent coverage because term allows you to buy more insurance at a lower price. And, we’ve found the best place to get policies is usually through your district or the National Education Association’s program, both of which are negotiated to benefit you.

Many times, other insurance agents will show up at your school, but typically it’s best to steer clear from their sales pitch.
